Museu Calouste Gulbenkian

One of Europe's great private collections — Egyptian antiquities to Lalique jewellery.

About

The Gulbenkian Museum houses one of the most exceptional private art collections ever assembled. Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian, the Armenian-British oil magnate, spent half a century acquiring 6,000 objects spanning 5,000 years — and left them all to Portugal.

The permanent collection moves chronologically from ancient Egyptian scarabs and Greco-Roman coins to Islamic manuscripts, Japanese prints, Flemish masters, French 18th-century decorative arts, and the extraordinary Art Nouveau jewellery of René Lalique. The Modern Collection, shown in an adjacent building, presents 20th-century Portuguese and international art.

The museum sits within a stunning 7-hectare garden — an oasis in the city that's free to enter even without a museum ticket.
