Azulejo Tile Painting

The azulejo tile is Portugal's most distinctive art form — five centuries of storytelling compressed into 15 square centimetres of glazed ceramic. In this workshop in a traditional Alfama studio, you'll learn the techniques used by Portuguese tile painters and create your own piece to take home.

Your instructor demonstrates the basics of underglaze painting on bisque ceramic: outlining with cobalt, filling with colour, creating geometric and floral motifs. Then it's your turn. The workshop is genuinely hands-on — you design and execute your own tile from start to finish.

Tiles are kiln-fired after the session and couriered to your home address anywhere in the world. You leave with a production tile to inspect, and the finished piece arrives within two weeks.
